By practising kindness toward others, do we give a gift to ourselves?
Winston Churchill once stated, “We make our living by what we get, but we make our life by what we give.” What a realistic assertion it is. Whatever we choose to examine, literature, history, or current events, we will ultimately wind up in the mirror of these words.

Remember the old miser Scrooge? In “A Christmas carol”, Charles Dickens portrayed this character as an embodiment of utmost greed. Day after day, Ebenezer lingers overtime in the office, failing to show a gram of kindness toward his servants. There is no other subject of adulation to him aside from “the green power”, and only the advent of the three ghosts returns a truly benign smile onto his face. Full of Christmas charity, how elated Scrooge becomes after the confession. Who knew that sending a turkey to his ill-treated clerk, Bob Crachit, could ever make this man gratified?

An even bigger triumph was the life of Mother Theresa. A solvent youth, she felt the urge toward munificence at an early stage of her development. Eager to aid the deprived, this precocious lady was absolutely ready to forfeit her means and fully submerge into painstaking community work. Seeing others receive support and assistance not solely appeased Mother Theresa, but earned her immortal acclamation.

A great number of people like Mother Theresa keep proliferating today as never before. Those are innumerable volunteers in charitable foundations such as Oxfam, and miscellaneous non-governmental organizations such as Médecins Sans Frontières or CARE International, whose aims in life are drastically dedicated to benevolence. Take a while to picture what it’s like to be a Peace Corps volunteer. Travelling overseas to distant locations from the United States, these unpaid helpers make real differences in the lives of real people.

To draw the line, being kind toward others is exceptionally rewarding. Those personalities disputed over in literature, history, and current events are vivid examples of how magnanimity gifts its adherents.
